Know the Differences Between Waterproof and Water Resistant Floors

“Waterproof” and “water-resistant” describe the ability of flooring materials to withstand exposure to water and moisture. However, waterproof and water resistant floors have different implications.

Waterproof Flooring

Waterproof flooring is designed to be entirely impervious to water. It can be submerged in water or exposed to wet conditions for an extended period without incurring damage. They are mostly vinyl.

Waterproof and Water Resistant Floors

Vinyl products are constructed with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) along with other natural stone source materials such as limestone. Other waterproof flooring include certain types of laminate flooring and some engineered hardwood with waterproof cores.

Waterproof flooring is an excellent choice for areas prone to frequent water exposure. These include bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and laundry rooms. But be careful. Water can damage waterproof flooring if the edges of the installation are not sealed properly and water is able to seep underneath.

Water-Resistant Flooring

Water-resistant flooring can handle some water, but it is not completely waterproof 😊. It can tolerate moisture and occasional spills without instant damage, but if exposed to water for a long time, it may warp, swell, or develop mold and mildew.

Waterproof and Water Resistant Floors

Many types of laminate flooring, some engineered hardwood, and certain types of tile and stone flooring are considered water-resistant.

Water-resistant flooring is suitable for areas with some moisture but should not be used in areas with high levels of water exposure or standing water.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to note that even waterproof and water resistant floors can still be damaged if water seeps between seams, edges, or gaps in the installation. Proper installation and maintenance are essential for preserving the integrity of the flooring. Additionally, it’s important to consider other factors. Keep in mind the subfloor condition and room ventilation when selecting and installing flooring in areas with potential moisture issues.
